Christmas is almost here….

Have you already put up the Christmas Tree? And started baking cookies? In only a few weeks the “most wonderful time of the year” will be reaching its pinnacle: Christmas Day. In the coming weeks I will write regularly in this blog . I will not forget about Hannukah and Kwanzaa.

I am looking forward to it!

This is the season of light:

We’ve all got both light and dark inside us.What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.                                J.K. Rowling, author

E=mc~2: A Biography of the World’s Most Famous Equation by David Bodanis

Understanding Einstein…

We enjoyed reading this book as a family summer read. It was great to find out more about the origin of Einstein’s equation and to then watch the book come to life in PBS’ “Einstein’s Big Idea”. We discussed the historical context and looked up some of the events. Especially the fact that several women were part of the discoveries that led to this equation was gratifying. The famous equation brought to life!  E=mc~2

Economic Warfare: Secrets of Wealth Creation in the Age of Welfare Politics by Ziad Abdelnour

If you are one of those who wondered why despite all the bailouts of the banks, economic recovery has not been forthcoming: this book will enlighten you.
Money that was intended to be reintroduced back into the market disappeared into the pockets of a few individuals who caused the problems in the first place, and were not held accountable.
In his book, Mr. Abdelnour provides insights into what led to the economic melt-down of 2008, what exactly happened and suggestions on what changes need to occur on a national level to restore the American economy. He also provides personal strategies and vehicles for wealth creation.

How to Extend the Life of Your Batteries

By Maria Prusakowski

Due to the higher energy requirements of the modern car, the average battery life has become shorter. The life span depends on the energy usage and can vary from as little as 6 months to as much as 48 months (30%), although in exceptional cases this can be longer (we just replace an original battery from 2004).

Batteries will be drained of power when used for a longer period of time. They will drain faster when devices are switched on and off frequently, so sometimes keeping the device on will actually extend the life of your battery.

Cars and Other Vehicles

High temperatures affect the life of the battery. If temperatures can be controlled the life of the battery may be extended. A recent study revealed that relocating the battery outside the engine compartment has increased its life by almost eight months. Manufactures are looking at ways to relocate the battery away from the heat of the engine. Use of additional insulation may be an alternative.

Keeping the battery charged at all times is also very important to your battery life. Due to the driving habits of some individuals, some batteries are undercharged. This can lead to sulfation, where lead sulfate gets accumulated, reducing the battery’s capacity. Electrolyte levels will have to be checked frequently, especially during the hot months when the natural fluid expansion in hot weather will push excess electrolytes from the battery. An external battery may be used for charging. If the fluid level is low, use distilled water, or in a pinch use rain water as regular tap water contains chemicals and minerals that are harmful for your battery.

Portable Electronic Devices

Battery life can be increased for iPods, cell phones, laptops etc. by lowering the brightness when not necessary. For example, when using these devices in a dark room, it is not necessary to set the brightness to 100%. The brightness can be lowered enough so that the screen can be seen without exerting any strain on the eyes. The amount of time the backlight stays on can also be decreased. For iPods it doesn’t have to stay on for 10 seconds, 2 seconds should be good enough. Laptops can be set in hibernate mode when not in use.

One most important point that not many people are aware of is that turning down the volume increases battery life. Use headphones that are louder and leave the volume at 50%.

Background applications are power hungry monsters. Stop everything that is not being used. Defragmenting the hard drive once in a while helps decrease file scatter on the hard drive and uses up less power. Send the computer into standby mode after a certain period of inactivity as it conserves battery. Although, standby resume also uses some power but not as much as starting up. Interestingly, leaving a CD or DVD in the drive can decrease battery life, as it hogs power whenever the drive spins up.

Wi-Fi Applications

Battery life in Wi-Fi apps can be prolonged by either increasing battery capacity or reducing Wi-Fi product power consumption and through control methods. It is easy to increase battery capacity; however, due to technological limits, it may lead to an increase in cost and size of the battery. That brings us to the option of reducing power consumption, which can be done by prolonging the standby time and shortening the time of the active cycle. You can also turn off the WiFi on the iPod when not in use as it consumes a large amount of life.

These techniques of low power consumption can improve battery life dramatically. Most of them are common sense usage techniques and can easily be made part of our daily lives.

Desiderata – be inspired by these words…

Desiderata

Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shams, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Business cards can play an important role, which is why we have included an article about them. You can have some specially prepared for this time of year with special wishes on one side, or you can include them with your cards and gifts.

Business Cards – Presenting Your Image to the World

By Maria Prusakowski

Business cards are an important tool in your marketing plan. Below are a few tips on how to use them to your advantage in the market place.

Decide on a layout that makes a card stand out.
A business card gives a first impression and reflects your business to the world. It is a marketing tool and a way to network with business partners and potential clients.
Make sure that the font type and size used is easy to read. Ask yourself, “What impression do I want to make?”
Examples: bold colors, pictures, stand-out logo, use of a differently shaped card.

Proofread your card and then have a knowledgeable, independent third party proofread it if possible.
Potential clients and business executives will perceive you as unprofessional if you have spacing, grammatical, and spelling errors.
It is better to recycle the paper and order a new batch of cards than to save money using flawed cards. Poorly done cards can cost you much more than a few dollars…

A business card is just that, a business card.
Use the KISS principle: Keep It Simple Savvy… Many companies use card scanners to import your information into their database. If the scanner cannot read your card, entry of the data manually could lead to errors and lost business opportunities.

A business card is an investment in your business.
You will impress potential clients by the use of a better quality card stock with a glossy finish or stylish embossing. These extra details may cost more, but the message that it sends to your clients will be worth it: Look professional to be successful.

A business card tells the world who you are and who you represent.
Make sure that you display your name, title, and current contact information prominently on the face of the card. If people cannot contact you because the information on the card is out of date, your business will go to someone else.

A business card does not have to be expensive.
There are many online sites where you can find very competitively priced cards.
Some sites offer free cards. However, you still pay for shipping and handling. It is worth paying a few dollars extra to remove the free advertising logo from the card. Compare the price per card. You will find that paid cards are often a better deal in larger quantities and give you more options.
Another option is to print your own. This will give you flexibility in quantity and allows you to make customized business cards for specific occasions and add special offers. Keep some card stock handy so you never run out.

A business card has two sides – use them.
Use the front to introduce yourself. Use the back to expand on it. You can include areas of expertise, special incentives or some useful information to encourage people to hold on to your card. Examples:

Expertise: We buy all types of real estate: single family, mobile homes, commercial.
Special incentive: 5% off your purchase when you show this card.
Useful information: tip chart, calendar, game schedule, etc.

A few more tips regarding business cards.
Have them with you at all times and hand them out. They will not do you any good if you keep them in your office and do not have any to hand out at a networking event. If you need to save money and have two businesses, put one business on each side, rather than combining the information for both on the same side.

Consider getting a smart phone application, which enables you to scan cards and lets you send your card to other smart phone users.
When you receive a business card, write a note about where you got it, and enter it in your database right away. Make it a point to follow up as soon as possible.

Conclusion.
Business cards are very effective, when designed and used correctly.

Apps Traps – How Safe Are The Applications You Download?

By

When downloading applications on your smart phone, have you ever checked the permissions you are giving to the provider of the (sometimes”free”) applications?

Here are descriptions of some of the permissions found on applications:

Phone Calls
Read phone state and identity. Allows access to phone features and can determine the number that the call is connected to.
Question: How many people are aware that their information is exposed when they call a friend who has given this permission?
Directly call phone numbers. Allows the application to call phone numbers without your intervention.
Question: When did you last check your phone bill for unexpected calls? You may be paying for someone else’s phone calls…

Hardware Controls
Take pictures
Allows an application at any time to take pictures with the camera and collect images the camera is seeing.
Record audio
Allows application to access the audio record path.
Question: How much sensitive and private information is being exposed to prying eyes and ears without people being aware of this? One application with this permission has over 50 Million downloads. Are phones allowed within secure locations? Are they checked for downloaded apps?

Modify/delete SD card contents
Allows an application to change and remove information on your SD card
Question: What information is being accessed, modified or deleted?

Your personal information
Allows an application to add or modify calendar events, read all contact address data stored on your phone and send your data to other people
Question: What can someone do with this data-mining goldmine? With access to calendars – advance knowledge on planned events and the ability to change the dates?

Network communication
Allows an application full internet access.
Question: Is there a legitimate reason why this application needs full internet access?

Your location
Allows an application to determine where you are.
Question: What can someone do with this information? They know where you are and where you are not. Who would like to know this and could benefit from this knowledge?

Your accounts
Allows an application to request authentication tokens, get a list of accounts known by the phone, add and remove accounts and deleting their password.

Question: How many people experience a “glitch” with accessing their accounts and do not realize their accounts may have been accessed by an outsider? One application with this permission has over 5 Million downloads…

Conclusion
A lot of sensitive information is exposed to third parties by giving permissions while downloading applications. There are many applications that do require certain permissions (for example a program like Outlook will need to be able to access personal information and make changes to contact addresses), but others do not (why would a flashlight application need permission to take pictures?). Do not download any applications without checking the permissions you give and without checking if there is a legitimate reason for the permissions requested. It’s better to be safe than sorry…

Be Prepared: Hospital Admission

By Maria Prusakowski

Good preparation can make a huge difference when you are admitted to a hospital.

Points to Remember:

Make sure you are adequately insured

If you have insurance:
Review your insurance before you need to use it. Find out what the insurance covers and if you have any deductibles. Also find out if you need to ask special permission for any procedures. The insurance may have agreements with specific providers for discounted services.

If your insurance is inadequate, you may look into additional insurance for certain conditions/treatments.

If you do not have insurance:
Get insurance before you need to use it.

Contact several local insurance agents, or check online for quotes.

Find out if you qualify for COBRA (especially if you have recently become unemployed, you may be able to get it from your previous employer).

If you cannot afford regular health insurance find out if there are state run programs (like the CHIP program for children) available to you.

Maintain a medical health record for you and your family members.
Ask your parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters about their health – that information can give valuable information regarding your risk of getting certain diseases as some are linked genetically. Keep a record of any vaccinations, procedures, allergies, symptoms and lab results.

If you have some special requirements, make a list of those as well, for example certain food preferences (vegetarian), religious restrictions (no pork), cultural considerations (maintain a head cover at all times)

Be prepared
Have a list ready for items you may use in a hospital. If you are going for a planned admission, you will have time to pack all items. Have the list in an easy to find place so you can find it in case of an emergency.

Some items to be included:
Your insurance papers, health record, small amount of cash, personal care products, address book (you may not be able to use your smart phone due to interference with electronic equipment), pen + note pad, books/magazines to read, cd/mp3 player with music and/or audio books, comfortable clothing, comfortable foot wear, pillow

Write down any questions you may have for your doctor, nurse or therapist
You will find that you only think of questions to ask when they are not in the room. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is important to be fully informed. Ask for clarifications as needed.

Keep a record of treatments, doctor’s visits, procedures
Compare your record with the billing statement you receive.

According to the Medical Billing Advocates of America as many as 9 out of 10 bills from hospitals and medical providers include errors (Wikipedia).

Remember: doctors, nurses, therapists and other staff are people too.
Treat them with kindness and appreciate the work they do. All are affected by the cuts in health care and staffing. Acknowledge the cleaners, orderlies and volunteers. They play an important part in making your stay as agreeable as possible.

Get better service, save money and be informed!

Inspirational Quotes

Chinese proverb

Be successful as yourself. Do what you believe in and what feels right and true to you. The worst thing is to be successful as someone else.

Book Review

Use What You’ve Got, and Other Business Lessons I Learned from My Mom – by Barbara Cocoran

If you are not familiar with Barbara Corcoran: Check out the Shark Tank – a program about new entrepreneurs seeking investment funding for their start-up companies. I loved reading Barbara Corcoran’s book – I would recommend it for anyone who wants to be successful in business. This is what Amazon had to say about the book:

In Use What You’ve Got, Barbara shares her hilarious stories about growing up, getting into trouble, failing miserably, and then starting over again. In each chapter, she comes back to one of her mom’s unconventional lessons, and how it applies in the real world of business. Whatever your calling, the homespun lessons that work for Barbara will help you use what you’ve got to create success in your life. Whether you’re just starting out, fighting your way up the career ladder, or reentering the workforce, Use What You’ve Got is an owner’s manual to your most valuable asset.
